Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 cups water or milk
  • 1 cup mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) fresh or frozen, sliced if large
  • 1 pinch salt

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula

Method

  1. Bring water or milk to a gentle boil in a medium saucepan over medium heat, and add a pinch of salt. Once it starts bubbling lightly, stir in the rolled oats.
  2. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the oats are soft and the mixture thickens—about 5 to 7 minutes. You should see the oats become tender and absorb the liquid, creating a creamy base.
  3. Gently fold in the fresh or frozen berries, mixing them into the porridge, allowing their juices to release and infuse flavor. Continue to cook for another 2–3 minutes, so the berries warm through but remain mostly intact.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit for a minute; this helps the porridge relax and develop a more uniform texture.
  5. Spoon the hot, berry-studded porridge into bowls, ensuring each serving has a good mix of oats and vibrant berries on top.
  6. Enjoy immediately while warm, savoring the creamy oats and bursts of tart berry flavor in every bite.
