Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 large fresh apple peeled and diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
  • a pinch salt

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Wooden Spoon

Method

  1. Add the oats, water, a pinch of salt, and diced apple to a saucepan and bring to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  2. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the oats absorb the liquid and the apple softens, about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Stir in the cinnamon, ginger, and maple syrup, allowing the flavors to meld as the mixture thickens further, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Check the consistency; if you prefer it creamier, splash in a little hot water or milk and stir until smooth.
  5. Remove the saucepan from heat once the oats are tender, the mixture is thickened, and the apple is just starting to disintegrate slightly.
  6. Spoon the warm oatmeal into bowls and serve immediately, topping with extra cinnamon or a drizzle of maple syrup if desired.

Notes

Feel free to add nuts or seeds on top for extra crunch. Adjust spices to taste for a milder or more intense flavor.
